Chapter 14

Chris

The next morning, I was surprised—and not—to find that the wolves’ pack lands resembled my family’s ranch. The way the crow flies, it was probably only ten kilometers from the cabin, but by road, it took us about forty-five minutes to get to the large black metal gate with the sign Rademaker Range arching over it. Neil’s son, Isaac, hopped out of the truck when we reached it and pushed it open, waiting for the two vehicles to pass before wheeling it shut again. I was glad to see there was no lock on it—it was meant to be a deterrent to random visitors, not a means of keeping people in.

Not that I’d truly thought Neil was lying or had ulterior motives. After all, I had a paranormal lie detector on my side, and Teague hadn’t indicated that Neil wasn’t worthy of our trust.

The laneway was covered in gravel and well-maintained, with only a few inevitable potholes. The freeze-melt cycle in this part of winter played havoc with unpaved roads. The trees had been trimmed back from the lane, not crowding quite as close as they did on the driveway leading to the cabin. We rounded a curve, and my breath caught at the sight before us.

It was probably once a mountain meadow, one they’d expanded to make room for the enormous log house sprawling before us. It had the same general look as the cabin we’d borrowed but more refined, with a red metal roof, a wide staircase leading to the front double doors, and a wraparound veranda. Other houses were scattered past the main one, each larger than our cabin but clearly intended for one family each, whereas the main house could house multiple families.

Frankie, seated between Teague and me, let out a low whistle. “Nice place.”

“Right?” I was a little jealous. I mean, I loved the ranch back in Arrington, but this was next level. “Wonder how much land they have.”

“Plenty, I’d guess.” Teague angled his head to look up through the trees at the mountain looming over the meadow. “I’m not sure I’d like to live full-time in a space so close to a mountain though.”

“Why?” Frankie asked.

“Rock slides.” Teague shuddered and sat back in his seat. “You ever hear the story of Frank, Alberta?”

Frankie frowned and shook his head. “No.”

“I found out about it while researching the history I missed after I woke up. Not sure how I came across it, but half the town was destroyed by a rock slide in the middle of the night in 1903. It gave me nightmares for weeks.”

“Awesome. That was a worry I didn’t need, Teague. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Happy to share.”

Neil parked next to a handful of other vehicles by the main house, and I pulled in beside him. As he emerged from the SUV, a few other people popped out of the house and stood on the veranda, watching us as we got out. The vibe was cautious but welcoming, which I could appreciate.

A woman with blond hair showing a few strands of gray trotted down the steps to greet Neil with a kiss.
